Small Steps: The Reality of Life Transitions | Week 3 Post-layoff
The COBRA notice arrived in the mail this week. Such a simple envelope, yet it made me think about how much has changed in just a few weeks. As we sat reviewing and canceling some of our monthly expenses, it continues to resonate with me: reinvention won't happen in one giant leap – it's about keeping our vision in mind while making small, daily decisions that reshape our lives.
The Journey Continues
This week brought a mix of progress and reality checks. After a particularly overwhelming Wednesday, we discussed trying out a new daily schedule: dedicated focus blocks in the morning, taking actual breaks away from our desks and screens, and freedom in the afternoon to work on other projects or tasks. It's a small step in the direction of the life-work balance we're working toward.
Making Progress
From returning to workouts after a two-month injury break to implementing new client processes, we're discovering that lasting change happens gradually. This week's grocery planning saved us $28 and meant less stress about "what's for dinner?" and the temptation to eat out - a small win that impacts both our budget and daily peace of mind. We're learning to celebrate these smaller victories while managing the practical realities of our transition.
Transition Updates
Corporate Exit
As we shredded the COBRA paperwork (goodbye $2,400/month premiums!), we reflected on the shift from corporate benefits to self-employment reality. While that chapter is closed, the friendships built over 14 years of hallway conversations and team meetings remain - they're just moving to occasional lunch or coffee dates instead of daily check-ins.
Virtual Business
Client work is picking up with two potential new client meetings this week. While we're working more hours and bringing in less income during this busy season, client needs come first. (Bryan joked about changing the name of the blog for the month of January to "Working More Making Less" - lol).
An overwhelming Wednesday sparked necessary changes in our client processes. Two key challenges emerged: managing information flow and maintaining balanced engagement. Our solution: extra attention on communicating expectations and government deadlines - and not being stressed when clients don't meet their deadlines. When we ran our businesses, government deadlines were always a top priority. Missing them only caused more grief and money. We're learning that letting the client deadline stress go protects our mindset, energy and reduces our stress.
Travel & Home
The camper is ready to pickup and is a 6 hours away. Since we're prioritizing client work we plan to pick it up in a few weeks. We want to bring the dogs and camp in it somewhere on the way home. This will be our first camping adventure, with many details to work out - from choosing a campsite to managing both dogs and clients while on the road.
What We're Learning
• Small, daily decisions have more impact than waiting for perfect timing
• Financial adjustments are ongoing – for now, while we're growing the business, we're cancelling Netflix ($16.77 per month) and Spectrum cable ($95.74 per month)
• These changes save $1,350 yearly while creating more time for outdoors, reading and hobbies
• We've given ourselves permission to prioritize client work over personal projects (like the camper) while in these beginning months and while building our foundation
